Why Apply Concrete Spalling Treatment

Any structure composed of concrete and steel represents an investment. An investment of this type must be taken care of, improvements are sometimes made to the existing structure but repairs are of the utmost importance when it comes to protecting your investment and making sure it continues to serve it's purpose for years to come.

On occasion, when the concrete is not sufficient to cover the steelwork or water has been able to enter through a crack of some kind, a process known as "spalling," can occur. When moisture is allowed to come into contact with the exposed steelwork, rusting can take place. This rusting compromises the integrity of the structure and must be repaired. The way to do this is by applying a concrete spalling treatment. The concept of repair is simple, loose concrete is removed thereby exposing the rusting steel framework. From that point, any rust or corrosion is cleaned and removed. If the steel itself has not been damamged it is then rust proofed. If there are signs of steel damage then that section of steel is removed and replaced. Once that part of the job has been completed, new concrete is then applied to seal up the surface and prevent further damage from taking place.

There are several different reasons why spalling occurs but the bottom line is, the damage caused by it needs to be repaired as soon as possible after the damage is located. Money can be saved in the long run by applying the concrete spalling treatment before the damage has become so extensive that an easy fix is no longer an option.
